I a. interested in having a small farm and my parents agreed to it. I already own a horse, seven dogs, a cat, and more recently two ducklings and I plan to get a few more. Ok so you've got a lot of questions and if I don't help I suggest going to a farming and livestock store near by and seeingg if they have chicken information books you can purchase. There are two ways to get chickens. You can get them fully grown or as chicks and as chicks you buy eggs and incubate them or you can purchase chicks from a near by hatchery, friend, or someone you know of tht raises chickens. I've heard its best to see the chickens so you can determine if you would be getting healthy chickens. If the chickens you are getting your chicks from has chickens that dont look healthy there is a chance your chicks could be unhealthy. You keep chickens on chick starter for quite a long time and you could keep them on it until they begin laying. After that you switch to laying feed. You can make a fence using chicken wire (we consider this any fence type that has very small oles) attached to boards. You shoud have a chicken coop for them to sleep in which you can purchase from a feed store or build for yourself. If you decide to build it for yourself then they need a pace that they can roost on which could be a pole going across from one side of the building to the other. They will also need nest boxes to lay eggs in because even if you have no rooster you still get eggs. We feed our chickens Purina chick feed and Purina chick starter. (For the first three weeks provide Teramycin in water) Ducks and chickens do get along, but you may consider seperating them until they are fully developed because chicks are known for pecking or picking on each other to the death. If you notice one or more chicks is being picked on seperate them from the others. We have one mallard duck and six white ducks living in our pen with our twenty fully grown chickens and five turkeys. When introducing chicks into the chicken pen make sure THEY find their way around and to the outside because if you chase them out or put them outside they wont know how tto ge back inside. I suggest using wood chips in you pen or gravel because this will keep your pen less dusty. You can also use sand. In chicken poop there is amonia which in large quantities can affect chickens breathing and even your own if not controlled. Adding lime will downsize ammonia quantities and adding oyster shels will make egg shells harder. chickens also need to be able to eat little bits of grave because that is how they process their food. You should lock chickens in side a night because they have many enimies including domestic and wild cats and dogs, foxes, racoons, owls, an anything that can get its paws on them. I hope this helped
